The Internet is a vast expanse of opportunity that has shaped my educational career. During my undergraduate degree the Internet was not as vital as it presently is. I took one computer class and had to learn html. However, when I began my Master’s program in 2013, it was crucial. I obtained my Master’s in Educational Media Design and Technology from Full Sail University all online. Throughout the program I utilized Internet for attending weekly class, simulations such as Second Life and World of War craft, and group meetings via Google Hangout including audio and visual conversations. Utilizing the Internet and these tools made interaction across the globe achievable. I did not physically attend the college until graduation. The Internet opened up the opportunity for me to obtain a complete media education from one of the top schools in the country. This education revealed the opportunities that existed in my desired career of technology specialist.
After completion of my Master’s, I desired to begin pursuing my PhD in Technology. A required component during the program search was that it was online. My family is established at our current residence and do not wish to relocate. There were minimal choices and I found Keiser University to be the ideal program for me. I would not have had the opportunities to advance my education, ergo advancing my career without the Internet.
The Internet was not only vital in attending school, but additionally throughout completing assignments. The level of assignments on Grappling’s Spectrum was transforming. There was no way I could have completed the work without technology. This is evident in the ability to obtain information at my desired times and without location requirements. Due to the needs of my family, I would not have been able to attend class or a library to complete assignments. Through the use of simulations, virtual worlds, and online contact I have been able to cultivate a global presence.
In addition to my education the Internet has shaped my career as a teacher. I began in a public school system that only possessed a desktop computer. From there I advanced to a district that incorporated technology as a vital resource for teachers. As I learned the new classroom management required with technology, I was chosen to complete two hundred fifty hours of learning which assured my eMints certification. With this certification I was allocated one computer per two students. This experience created a whole new realm of opportunity, not only with a computer, but access to the Internet. The Internet enabled me to create lessons that were based off the curriculum, but enabled me to expand past the words in a book. The relevance of lessons was improved, as the Internet is a vital piece in the global society. The students that I educated are more prepared for their future jobs that will necessitate the Internet.
The students learned the essential strategies to navigating the Internet. Students are frequently given information and required to retain it. Through the use of the Internet students are given the skills to find information and utilize it to solve problems using inquiry-based learning. Students are also more engaged through the use of the Internet and technology. Students are becoming global citizens by sharing their work via websites, wikis, blogs, and more. They are additionally learning and relearning skills, which will be imperative as employees.
There are adverse issues the Internet has forged that have to be evaluated. Including but not limited to cyber-bullying, social interactions, exposure, and viruses. Cyber-bullying is a serious issue that has claimed numerous lives. I realize that there has always been bullying. However, when I was in school I could get away from it when I was away from school. Since the Internet, there is never a way to escape it. The bully can reach you outside the walls of the school through the use of the Internet. Socialization is an important skill to develop. If people spend all their time on the Internet in simulations, they will not know how to interact with people outside of the fantasy. On the other hand it is imperative that people know how to communicate through technology in the global marketplace. Utilizing the Internet discloses the potential to be exposed to sexually inappropriate material. Those who use the Internet need to be aware of viruses and their potential to damage hardware and information. Even with the risks associated with the Internet, the benefits exceed in value.
